About Heby Municipality

 (12 kb)
Heby Municipality is located on the borders of Uppland and Västmanland. Heby Municipality is a part of Uppland and belongs administratively to the County of Uppsala. The population is 13 700.

Heby Municipality has seen many changes in recent decades. The Heby Municipality of today was formed in 1971 when four smaller municipalities merged: Tärnsjö, Östervåla, Vittinge and Heby.

Trade and industry in Heby have also gone through great structural changes. Heby used to be an important agricultural district. Agriculture is still important in Heby, but the number of farms has decreased dramatically. Today horses well outnumber cows on the meadows of Heby.

During the 20th century Heby and Vittinge were well known for the production of bricks. Thirty years ago there were about 20 factories producing bricks in the southern part of the municipality. Today only one is left - Vittinge Tegel.

The northern part of Heby Municipality has a tradition of handicraft. In Östervåla, skilled carpenters produce wooden furniture using traditional designs. The speciality of Tärnsjö is leatherwork, particularly saddlery. Just outside Tärnsjö we find the Färnebofjärden National Park. The river Dalälven forms an archipelago with an extraordinary fauna and the fishing is excellent.

Part of an expansive region...
Not long ago the people who lived in the municipality also worked there. But when jobs disappeared from traditional industries, commuting to workplaces in the bigger cities increased. Communications are therefore of great importance to Heby Municipality. Heby is part of the Stockholm/Mälardalen region, the most expansive region in Sweden. Its closeness to Stockholm, Uppsala, Arlanda and Västerås is a blessing to a small rural municipality like Heby. People are moving out from the crowded cities. For the price of a tiny apartment in Stockholm you can get a big beautiful house in Heby.

There are a great many small companies in Heby, mainly concentrating on the Stockholm/Uppsala region. This gives Heby a flexible labour market, less vulnerable because it is not dependent on only a few big industries. Today the municipality itself is the biggest employer. The unemployment rates in Heby are among the lowest in Sweden.

In summer, Dalälven is also excellent for swimming. Outside Östa you can find 5 kilometres of sand beach edged by the forest. This is the Riviera of Dalälven. In Östa you can rent cabins for comfortable camping in the wilderness. Part of the Dalälven archipelago is today a national park due to its unusual flora and fauna.

In a countryside with many cultural traditions you generally find a large number of horses. Local authorities encourage horse-related activities to give the area its own characteristic.

The Municipality of Heby – not far from Uppsala, Stockholm, Arlanda Airport and Västerås – offers everything from wilderness, fishing in the river Dalälven and historical sites, to shopping. The area is also known for its many horses.

...but also peace and quiet

The municipality of Heby is located in the northwest of Uppland. In Heby, true wilderness can be found in vast forests with elk, deer, fox, bear and lynx. In these forests you can find profound peace and quiet among tall trees, lichen and lingonberries. If you are lucky you can see a glimpse of a deer or an elk - the king of the forest.

The river Dalälven forms Heby's northern border. Dalälven is one of the largest rivers in Sweden. In Heby Municipality this river forms an archipelago of creeks and islands. It is very rich in fish and is a popular fishing area for tourists from all over the world. This is an important site for wildfowl, among others the impressive osprey.
